Parental Bereavement Leave

The government has now published the necessary legislation, which will see employed parents who lose a child aged under 18, being entitled to two weeks’ bereavement leave. This will mean employees are better supported at such a difficult time.

This new legislation, which comes into effect on the 6^th April 2020, will cover any working parent, no matter how long they have worked for their employer.  Parents employed for six months or more, will also be able to claim statutory pay for the bereavement period in line with the approach for other entitlements such as maternity leave, subject to meeting the eligibility criteria.

Bereaved parents will be able to take leave in either a single block of two weeks or as separate blocks of one week across the first year after their child’s death.
